Alvar Aalto Vase
by Alvar Aalto
'The leather pants of an Eskimowomen', that's how the first sketches of Alvar Aalto vases were described. You can see in it whatever you want, but one thing is for sure: this shape has become an icon. The nature played a large part in the life and creativity of Aalto. His designs are a lot like the Finnish landscape, with it's thousands of lakes. The collection glasswork of Aalto was first presented in 1937 and is still produced by Littala. The vases are blown with the mouth by multiple masterglassblazers.
The best thing about the shape is that you can decide for yourself what you want to do with it. Because Aalto never said what his intention was for the 'vase'. The vases are pieces of art on its own, without any flowers in it. Nowadays, the vase is a world-famous glassobject.
